Tito Grauer

Tito Grauer was born in Lanciano on February 4, 1942, the same year Daisy and Katiuscia were born. All three were children of internees: Tito and Daisy’s parents were foreign Jews, while Katiuscia’s parents were interned for political reasons.

Samuel, Tito’s father, together with his wife Rosa Jordan, had managed to escape from Poland after it was invaded by the Nazis. From Danzica he went to live in Trieste, where on February 6, 1940, his first child, Marco, was born. The Grauer family was very poor. Samuel worked as a carpenter and, since his wife had begun suffering from heart problems, he had to take care of all the household chores as well as his son. On July 11, 1940, Samuel was arrested and transferred to the concentration camp in Casoli, then moved to Orsogna, where in November the rest of the family joined him. With Tito’s birth, the Grauer family remained in Lanciano, always facing great difficulties. They were arrested in November 1943. They were first taken to Chieti, then to the barracks in Aquila, from there to the concentration camp in Bagno a Ripoli, and finally to the prison in Milano. They were then deported to Auschwitz, where they arrived on February 6, 1944. The little brothers Tito and Marco were killed on the same day. As for Samuel and Rosa Grauer, neither the date nor the place of their death is known.

This playground is dedicated to Tito, and to all the children who, in every time and place, are denied the right to live their childhood.
